4 Tips for
Staying Safe Online
Being on the internet is normal nowadays, from looking where to eat, searching for answers, watching movies, or even reading a blog (like what you’re doing right now!)…. staying safe online is key to its’ enjoyment.
We are all connected by the internet somehow. However, there’s no doubt that there are some dangers in this place that you should know about.
Follow these handy tips for safe online interactions:
1. Browse Safely = Staying Safe Online
Most of the time, we like the internet for its uniqueness. It takes us to different videos, blogs, articles, shopping, games and much much more. Just as you wouldn’t visit dangerous neighbourhoods, it’s the same online. Be especially wary of mysterious and unreliable links that seem to attract you with claims that are too good to be true!
Also, if your device is warning you about the website or link, definitely follow that advice! These devices do their best to protect you, so steer away from dodgy looking links. Also, sites with too many pop-up ads are a great indicator that it is unreliable.
2. Beware of Strangers = Staying Safe Online
While there are many people you can trust and rely on online, sadly there are still bad people here. From scamming, catfishing, and simply spreading fake news.
Be especially on guard when strangers suddenly talk to you and ask for private and sensitive information like your address, bank accounts, and/or passwords. They ask for these as they are common sources of information that they can hold against you or use to take your money or even your identity. That is why it is important to have support from close friends and family to guide you if you’re dealing with risky online interactions.
3. Password Management = Staying Safe Online
Passwords keep your accounts safe, which in turn keeps you safe. It’s best to have strong passwords, but what does this mean?
Strong passwords are passwords that cannot be easily guessed or remembered. That is why accounts usually require at least 8 letters with numbers and even symbols. So, follow those suggestions. But also make sure that you can remember the password when the time comes!
However, many accounts also mean many passwords. While you can keep the same password for all accounts if ever someone accesses one of your accounts they may also take control of the others. So, it’s better to have different strong passwords for each of your accounts.
But all of this may seem hard to track, you can use password management programs.
4. Think before you click = Staying Safe Online
Our browsing may lead to endlessly clicking without really thinking about it. But the thing is, a simple click can lead us to danger. From purchasing online, posting, and social media interactions; these actions can just take one tap or click. So, be careful with each little move you make online.
A few points to think about:
- Buying things online has become a normal activity for most of us. It has become so convenient that most of us do not think of its’ danger. We expose our address when we purchase online, so make sure that you only pay and transact with reliable companies and people.
- Expressing ourselves to the world can easily be done. However, this can reach unreliable strangers. So, be mindful of what you post on social media accounts.
- Make sure that you do not give sensitive information.
