How to find a disability support worker that is perfect for you

Finding the perfect disability support worker for yourself can be a daunting task.
It is important to find someone who is reliable, patient, has similar interests to you, and a person who understands you for who you are.
Here are some tips to help you find the best support worker for you…

1. Do research on disability support worker organisations

There are many different support worker agencies out there, so take the time to do some research and find one that fits your needs. Some agencies are now solely based online like Careseekers and Hireup. They have a database of support workers that you can search through. Whilst others will let you know who they have available in your area and try to match you with someone that they think wil

If you know someone who has used a support worker before, why not ask for recommendations?

Once you have found an agency or database of support workers, take the time to look through profiles and read reviews. This will give you a good idea of who the support worker is, what they are like and if they would be a good fit for you.

2. Interview potential disability support workers

Yes! you read correctly, you can interview a potential support worker. This is your life and your support, so you have the right to choose who supports you.
Remember, to not just choose the first person who seems like a good fit or who you are told will be a good fit.
When interviewing potential support workers, make sure to ask about their experience, interests and availability. This will help you get a better understanding of who they are and if they would be a good fit for you.
If you feel like there is a good connection, ask if they would be available for a trial shift. This will give you the chance to see how well you work together and if they are the right support worker for you.

3. Ask for references

Be sure to ask potential support workers for references from those they have worked with in the past or their employers. This will give you a better idea of what they are like to work with.
Asking for references is also a good way to find out more about their experience and what kind of support they are able to provide.

4. You are not alone!

Remember you are not alone in this process, ask those around you who you trust to support you in finding the perfect support worker for you. So…. don’t be afraid to ask for help.

Finding the right person can sometimes be a lengthy process, but it is so worth it when you find that perfect support worker who just gets you.
The most important thing is to not give up and to keep looking until you find the right support worker for you. With these tips, hopefully, you will be one step closer.
