Independent living with or without an Intellectual Disability can be a challenge, but it is not impossible. There are a few things that you need to keep in mind each day to make sure that you live safely and independently.
Here are some tips to get you on the way to independent living:
Make a list of things that need to be done each day, and stick to it.
This will help keep you organised and on track.
You can even have a schedule on your fridge that you can update each week or whatever type of list suits you best. Keep your house clean and tidy at all times.
This will help avoid dangerous accidents, slips or falls. It also stops mess from building up in the house and it all becoming overwhelming.
Avoid leaving out dangerous items around the house. Such as knives or scissors.
Lock your doors and windows when you are leave your home.
This will keep your house and belongings safe and protected.
Keep on top of your bills.
It’s a good idea to have someone assist you with this. It is very important to not get behind on bills such as: rent, electricity or insurance. Falling behind with bills can be really stressful and can result in extra charges which no one wants!
By following these tips, you are on your way to successfully living alone. If there is something that you do not understand, don’t be afraid to ask for help. There are many people and organisations out there that can help with independent living if you have an intellectual disability. If you have regular support workers you can ask them for help!
Remember, it is important to take things one day at a time and to ask for help when you need it. With a little bit of effort, you can achieve your goal of living independently.
