Pack your bags with the
Me Plus More ladies!
You may or may not know, Me Plus More has a community group for those enrolled in our Independent Living Skills, Women in the Workplace or Work It streams of learning. The ladies on the Women in the Workplace stream of learning were discussing getting ready for work with an intellectual disability. They were specifically focusing on what things you would need in your bag ready for work!
We thought it would be great to share with you their fantastic ideas!
In our community group, we discuss the topics we have been learning about and much much more!
Getting ready for work with or without an intellectual disability is tough, even getting out of bed when the alarm goes off can be a challenge for some people.
Getting ready in the morning sets us up for a good day, so it’s important we get it right, and a big part of that is packing our bag.
Now, maybe you’re new to employment, or don’t yet have a job… fear not we’re going to give you the list of things you need to bring, with the help of our members Kymberleigh, Tara, Carla and Eleanor!
1. Medication
Do you have any medication you need to take throughout the day?
If so, make sure that goes in your bag.
A thought…. you may even want a tablet box just for your bag so you don’t forget to pack it!
2. Mobile phone and charger
At some workplaces, using your personal phone whilst at work is a no no, however it’s important you take it to work.
Why? Well, you may very well need to use it on your way to work and/or on your way home from work.
Also, good to keep it on you in case of emergency.
3. Glasses
Do you need glasses? Could be sunglasses, reading glasses whatever the case, be sure to pop them in your bag each morning. Or even pop them on your head!
4. Mask
Since covid 19 joined us, a mask has been required, and although this is not the case everywhere you may be requested to wear one.
So… it’s always handy to have one in your bag.
5. A drink
It’s always wise to take a water bottle everywhere you go. It is so important you stay hydrated at all times.
6. Purse or wallet
You may be thinking “No need for a purse or wallet anymore as I pay for everything with my phone” but what if you need some quick cash?
It’s always handy to have that available.
7. Keys
Also, an important point of your morning routine… locking the front door! Always keep your keys somewhere safe in your bag so they don’t fall out! .
8. A note pad
You may want to keep a notepad in your bag so you can take notes in meetings or you want to jot down some ideas whilst out and about.
9. Lunch!
The most important part of the day, right?? Be sure to pack a healthy lunch so you can have a great meal while at work…mmm lunch!
10. Tissues
It’s always handy to have some tissues in your bag. You never know when you’ll need them.
Thank you Kymberleigh, Tara, Carla and Eleanor for these handy tips on getting ready for work with an intellectual disability.
We think important for those without disability too….
We hope this list has helped you to pack your bag ready for your day ahead!
One last tip before you go… pack your bag the day before, this helps you to remember everything you need to and may help stop that morning rush we all know too well!
