What to think about when attending medical appointments…

Having a lot of therapy or medical appointments can sometimes feel stressful. There is often a lot of paperwork to look after and medication you may need to keep track of.

Like many things in life, getting everything organised and having some clear information can help you to feel more in control and assist you in making informed choices in your life.

Your health is important, and you are in charge of your body, yes you are in charge!

When making therapy or medical appointments, here are some questions you (or your support) can ask to make the day easier:

  • If you find waiting difficult, ask if there is an appointment where the wait time is minimal
  • What things might happen on the day?
  • Is there anything you need to do to get ready for the appointment?
  • How long will the appointment be?
  • Do you need to bring anything with you?
  • Do you have to pay for anything?
  • Is there parking?
  • How might you feel afterwards?

Remember, you can always ask someone to support you at an appointment!

There are many ways you can be supported at a medical appointments…

Your supports could:

  • Drive or travel with you
  • Help you to arrive on time
  • Wait with you
  • Help you to feel calm
  • Attend the appointment with you
  • Write down important information the doctor is telling you
  • Make sure your questions are answered
  • Assist you to understand what is being said
  • Write down what to do next
  • Help you make another appointment

After your appointment you might have some paperwork to sort through; you might have a new prescription; you might have another appointment; you might have some tests to book; there could also be some paperwork to file.

Remember, you are not alone. Your supports can help you with this.

Sometimes appointments can be a lot to cope with. Be kind to yourself! Take some time to unwind as soon as you can. If you are worried, don’t keep these worries to yourself, speak to someone you trust.
